Understanding the SDP
The Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a service option for individuals with developmental disabilities in many states, including California, that allows them to have greater control over the services and supports they receive. The steps to participate in the SDP may vary slightly depending on the state or regional center, but here’s a general overview of the process:

1. Understand the Program
Learn about the SDP and its core principles, including;

Freedom

Control

Support
-
Responsibility
-
Confirmation
Attend an orientation session offered by your Regional Center to understand how the program works and what it entails.

2. Determine Eligibility

Confirm you meet the eligibility requirements. In California:

You must be eligible for Regional Center services.

You cannot reside in a licensed long-term care facility, unless you plan to transition to community-based living.

3. Notify Interest

Express your interest in joining the Self-Determination Program by contacting your regional center.

Some programs may require participants to sign up on a specific list or application portal.

4. Receive Orientation

Attend a mandatory SDP orientation session to learn the details about the program, roles, responsibilities, and funding management.
